Zimbabwe possesses vast geological reserves of non-metallic minerals, yet the local manufacturing sector often faces challenges in refining these raw materials into high-value products. Specifically, the demand for kaolin clay for skin whitening has surged as the local cosmetic industry shifts toward natural, mineral-based ingredients to cater to both domestic and regional SADC markets.
The industrial landscape is currently characterized by a transition from raw ore exportation to value-added processing. There is a growing technical focus on the density of wollastonite for use in reinforced plastics and ceramics, as Zimbabwean manufacturers seek to improve the structural integrity of building materials to withstand the region's extreme temperature fluctuations.
Furthermore, agricultural and filtration sectors are increasingly exploring the properties of silica-based minerals. Understanding that diatomaceous earth is silica allows local chemical plants to optimize their filtration processes for mining and beverage production, reducing reliance on expensive imports from outside Africa.
